Braxton Garma and Olin Claussen each scored 14 points to lead the Kalaheo Stars to an 81-45 showing over Manny’s Sports in the first of two games played Tuesday at the Kalaheo Neighborhood Center.
Matt Lindsey and Manolito Pescador each netted 10 points to lead Manny’s Sports, which was sorely without personnel as several of its players were involved in the fight for the Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation boys volleyball title in Waimea.
Ian Khan burned the twine with 35 points to lead the Batty Boys to a 66-56 edge over Tropang-L, who, in spite of having trouble getting players on the floor due to work conflicts, saw James Badua finish with 12 points. Only two of the team’s roster were no-shows in the Kaua‘i Youth Basketball Association 18 and Over men’s league.
Despite the challenges of not having enough personnel, Karen Matsumoto of KYBA said the games went well, the coaches agreeing to switching the final playoff games to eight-minute quarters to allow for more playing time for the final games in the season.
With the results of the Tuesday night playoffs, Manny’s Sports will face Tropang-L for the league’s third-place spot starting at 6 p.m. at the Kalaheo Neighborhood Center.
That game will be followed by the Kalaheo Stars attempting to wrestle the lead from the Batty Boys starting at 7 p.m.
Following the lead of Garma and Claussen for the Stars, Nouveau Naumu, coming on strong in the past few games, finished with a dozen points along with Ian Clements and Tab Matsumoto. In that dozen pack, Naumu marked two three-balls, Matsumoto marked two treys and Clements finished with one from outside the three-point arc.
Trent Thompson finished with nine points, seven coming in the final stanza, Brandon Wong had four second-half points and Jim Aronica added four points in the win.
Following the Manny’s leaders, Allen Calumag and Spam Lindsey finished with six points each. Canaan Higa, finishing the Island School volleyball season, added five points, James Padre finished with four points. Kekoa Prem added two points before making the scene at the KIF volleyball championships and Bronson Bautista finished with a pair.
Following Khan’s 35 points for the Batty Boys, Clareson Torres added 13 points and Kyle Pigao finished with 10 points. Jed Balmidiano and Micah Bermoy each netted four to round out the win.
Sammy Perpose, Reggie Punzalan and Jr. Punzalan finished with nine and eight points, respectively, following Badua’s lead for Tropang-L. Reyante Villanueva ended with five points, Jaymark Serapio and Allen Mariano ended with four points and a deuce from Ronald Villanueva added a pair.
Matsumoto said once the 18 and Over finals are complete next Tuesday, the KYBA summer league should be starting with the 14 and Under age group during the May 17 week.
