LIHU‘E — Representatives and members of the various boards and commissions who serve the County of Kaua‘i were honored by Kaua‘i Mayor Bernard Carvalho Jr. and John Isobe, head of the county’s Office of Boards and Commissions, Tuesday.
Every president and elected official throughout the nation has promoted National Volunteer Week and designated a time to recognize and celebrate the tremendous effort of volunteers who serve at local, state and national levels, states a proclamation celebrating Tuesday as Boards & Commissions Volunteer Day.
The County of Kaua‘i Office of Boards and Commissions was established in 2006 and provides support and oversight for Kaua‘i’s 14 boards, commissions, and two advisory committees. There are 113 members who serve on these boards, commissions and advisory committees.
Carvalho said the county recognizes and celebrates the tremendous efforts of these outstanding volunteers who make both personal and professional sacrifices and give freely of their time in service to the county.
Board and commission members are highly qualified community leaders and represent the best in their fields, and the knowledge and guidance they provide is important to the overall effectiveness and efficiency of county operations, the mayor said.
Isobe said following the issuing of the proclamation by the mayor, the Office of Boards and Commissions offered light refreshments to the volunteer members — the first time the county has done this.
Honored groups include the Arborist Advisory Committee, Board of Appeals, Board of Ethics, Board of Review, Board of Water Supply, Charter Review Commission, Civil Service Commission, Committee on the Status of Women, Cost Control Commission, Fire Commission, Historic Preservation Review Commission, Liquor Control Commission, Planning Commission, Police Commission, Public Access, Open Spaces and Natural Resources Preservation Fund Commission and the Salary Commission.
