Sacramento State University’s Sam Schur, born and raised on Kaua‘i, came in first place in the decathlon at the Rafer Johnson/Jackie-Joyner Kersee Invitational held April 8-9 at the UCLA campus. Schur tallied 6,888 points — a meet record — to grab the gold. Consistency was Schur’s key to success, never finishing below fifth place in any event and taking first in the Long Jump, Shot Put and the 110 Meter Hurdles. Schur took second in the 100 Meter Dash, third in the Discus and 1,500 Meter Run, fourth in the Pole Vault and Javelin, and fifth in the High Jump and 400 Meter Dash. Now a sophomore, Schur was the leader after the first day and rode that wave of steady success to the top of the standings. His 6,888 points were the third-highest in Sacramento State history.
