The Red Raider adjustments in its lineup did not affect the 4-1 boys, or 4-1 girls win over Island School in the final Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation tennis matches of this season.
Waimea got an early start on its matches at the Hanapepe tennis courts because Kapa‘a players were enjoying the school’s prom that night. The Menehune finished with a 3-2 boys and 4-1 girls win.

Taking the place of Kukino on the Girls No. 1 Singles court, Orial battled with Island School’s Madison Duarte before finally taking the match in three, 6-7 (7-4), 7-5, 6-3.
Jennifer Grady, normally the Girls No. 1 Doubles team player, filled Orial’s shoes in the Girls No. 2 Singles court, getting past Island School’s Kaulana Hannenberg, 6-1, 7-5.
Kaua‘i’s Kari Noe and Kristine Castillo, on the Girls No. 2 Doubles court, took three sets to get past the Island School pair led by Lauren Spears, 4-6, 6-2, 7-5.
Island School enjoyed its victory on the Girls No. 3 Doubles court when the pair of Alisa Bezera and Genevera Sardos-Albertini defeated the Raider duo of Jaimee Gali and Noe Murray, 2-6, 7-5, 6-1.
Sam Dunham posted the Island School’s victory on the Boys No. 1 Singles court when he defeated Ryan Beiker, 6-4, 6-1.
Kaua‘i’s B.J. Kai came back to redeem that loss with a hard win over Island School’s Jeremy Randolph-Flagg, 7-6 (7-4), 6-1.
Kaua‘i boys took all of its doubles matches starting with Chris Flynn teaming with Mathew Kanna on the Boys No. 1 Doubles court to get past the Island School pair of Logan Domingo and Ryan Perez, 7-6 (7-4), 6-1.
Kaua‘i won the second and third boys doubles by default.
“This was a really hard weekend for Island School,” said one of the Voyager players from the sidelines. “A lot of our players are in Georgia with the Kaua‘ibots team at the National Competition.”
Chas Okamoto, the Kapa‘a No. 1 Boys Singles player, continued his domination on the court, defeating Waimea’s Joshua Ponting, 6-0, 6-0 for an undefeated streak heading into the Tennis Qualifying Series which starts Thursday morning in Po‘ipu.
Okamoto was joined by the Warrior pair of Anthony Lopez and Chris Wong, playing on the Boys No. 1 Doubles court, to down the Waimea pair of Chris Ajimura and Andrew Dutton, 6-2, 6-3.
Waimea’s Bryle Rivera edged out Kapa‘a’s August Trumm on the Boys No. 2 Singles court, 6-4, 6-3.
The Menehune duo of John Villanueva and John Gawaran worked hard on the Boys No. 2 Doubles court, taking three sets to get past Kapa‘a’s pair of Elliott Haigh and Hunter Bilbo, 6-7(7), 6-0, 7-6 (6).
Waimea’s Kaleo Hauata and James Paleracio, a recent candidate for the Mokihana Music Scholarship, also earned its victory on the Boys No. 3 Doubles court, getting past the Kapa‘a duo of Ryan Lopez and Reggie Agaran, 7-5, 6-4.
Kapa‘a’s pair of Jarrod Shin and Charles Kong earned an 8-4 win over Mark Razalan and Daniel Sagucio in a consolation match.
Waimea’s Jade Cano rebounded from her loss to Kukino last week to defeat Kapa‘a’s Makena McCluskey, 6-1, 6-4 on the Girls No. 1 Singles court.
Waimea’s Brittney Barreira, getting the support from her parents to came from the MS Walk at the Kukui Grove Center, handled Kapa‘a’s Alexsis Valdez, 6-0, 7-5 on the Girls No. 2 Singles court.
Kapa‘a’s sole victory on the girls courts came when Kaylie Nakamura and Jazzerrie Taeza teaming on the Girls No. 1 Doubles court to get past the Menehune pair of Rachel Umetsu and Dessa Rentrop, 7-6(5), 7-6(2).
Waimea wrapped up the day with wins in the Girls No. 2 and Girls No. 3 doubles matches as well as the consolation match.
Menehune Miriam Corpuz teamed with Chantelle Carveiro on the Girls No. 2 Doubles court to defeat Kapa‘a’s Kara Lee Higa and Sachi Detreaux, 6-3, 7-5, and Annalissa Hartsell and Brittney Palencia of Waimea defeated Kapa‘a’s Candice Miner-Ching and Lauren Pang, 6-0, 6-2.
Shantel Rita and Sarah Predas of Waimea defeated Nicole Deyeri and Detreaux, 8-3 in the girls consolation.
The KIF state qualifying tournament starts Thursday in Po‘ipu and wraps up on Friday.
