LIHU‘E — The annual Boy Scouts of America Makahiki — from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at the soccer fields just north of Vidinha Stadium — is Scouting’s oldest continuously running celebration, organizers said.
“Makahiki” is the Hawaiian word for an annual harvest celebration involving sports and cultural activities, during which war was prohibited, according to a Hawaiian dictionary by Mary Kawena Pukui and Samuel H. Elbert.
In addition to providing interactive displays and activities, the island’s scouts will participate in the island-wide finals of the Cub Scout Pinewood Derby of handmade miniature race cars, and many other events.
The admission ticket includes discount coupons from island merchants, and can be purchased at the door.
