Strong trades and threatening clouds generated excitement for the Nawiliwili Yacht Club Rum Series Race No. 1 Thursday, with the series being sponsored by the Koloa Rum Co.
OZone, battling with Fast Company through most of the race, ran into spinnaker problems in the second leg of the race and Fast Company capitalized on the mishap to pull off the win, crossing the line on a 1:10.17 elapsed time and correcting to a 1:10:23 PHRF for the win.
OZone sailed in second on a 1:11:36 elapsed and corrected out to 1:11:43 PHRF.
Coming off the start, Fast Company red-flagged Speedy on an infraction, but following the race, Speedy opted for a “retired after finish” instead of going to a protest hearing, according to NYC scorekeeper Sharon Gibson.
Papa‘au nailed third place on a 1:21:52 elapsed and corrected to 1:18:22 PHRF, just two seconds ahead of Coyote, which finished fifth overall at 1:23:42 elapsed but corrected to 1:18:24 PHRF.
Bonjolea finished fourth overall on a 1:22:31 elapsed sail but corrected out to 1:19:21 PHRF to round out the PHRF Open and Mono classes.
With its fifth overall finish, Coyote also corrected out to a 1:05:00 CLUB for top honors in the Club Open Class, second place going to Bonjolea who corrected out to 1:09:23 CLUB.
The public is invited to view the competition in the NYC Rum Series from the jetty wall on Thursday with the first flags flying at 5 p.m.
