WAILUA — Jino Sohn shot a two-over par 74 to claim first place in the Boys 13-14 class at the 14 and Under Junior Tour Series-Wailua Sunday.
Playing under clear blue skies interrupted by brief showers blowing in off the Pacific Ocean and down from the Kalepa hills, Sohn, the winner of the Boys 11-12 class in 2009, improved his opening round of 75 by a stroke to finish with a 149.
Second place in the flight went to Bryden Salvador finishing with a 173 (87-86).
“There was a lot of excitement this weekend,” said Laine Malson, the Hawai‘i State Junior Golf Association Tournament Director. “Along with the great scores, there was a hole-in-one on Saturday when Matthew Shen of Honolulu aced the par three No. 3 hole using a 4 hybrid from 172 yards.”
Mary Bea Porter-King, president of the HSJGA, said the shot was beautiful — “It just jumped in the hole!”
Shen, playing in the Boys 11-12 class, finished third overall with a 159 (78-81), dropping from his tie for second with Sian Reno Rogers following the first round.
Rogers shot a five-over par 77 to finish at 155 to nail the top spot in the class. Kyle Suppa followed a stroke back at 156 (76-80) after leading the class following Saturday’s play.
Kyosuke Hara, taking the Boys 9-10 class in 2009, finished fourth in the Boys 11-12, Sunday, carding a 161 (80-81), just a stroke ahead of Shawn Lu (162-73-79).
Kaua‘i’s Keegan Loo tied with Nathaniel Roy Idica for fifth place, both golfer finishing with 165.
Elizabeth Madeline White led the Girls 11-12 division with a 189 (99-90) over Hi‘ilani Wailana Rosa-Alan (203), Annika Espino (211), Milburn Ho (217) and Samantha Keppel (231).
Joseph P. Newmann, tying with Kane Ryu Rogers following the opening round, shot an 84, two strokes better than Rogers’ 86 in the final round to take the Boys 7-10 competiton with a 162 (78-84), just a stroke ahead of Marlon Bottorff of Maui (163-83-80).
Rogers finished third at 164 (78-86), two strokes ahead of Andy Kang (166-89-77), carding the best round, Sunday at five-over par.
The next HSJGA event will be played April 10-11 at the Pukalani Country Club on Maui.
