LIHU‘E — Kaua‘i residents have an opportunity to celebrate one of the county’s resources leading to projects such as affordable housing, anti-poverty programs, infrastructure development and expanding economic opportunities for low- and moderate-income people.
April 4 to April 10 has been designated as National Community Development Week, coinciding with the one week in April set aside by the Board of Commissioners of the National Community Development Association to provide recognition and appreciation to the Community Development Block Grant program.
That program was enacted in 1974 by President Gerald Ford through the Housing and Community Development Act of 1974 and took effect in January, 1975. Today, it is one of the longest-running programs of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.
On Kaua‘i, the county’s Housing Agency has utilized CDBG resources to identify, prioritize and resolve pressing local problems such as affordable housing, development of public and private facilities that principally benefit low- and moderate-income people, public service needs, job creation and retention and housing facilities rehabilitation.
