KAPA‘A — Waimea pitcher Shelley Koerte gave up just one hit to Kapa‘a in the Menehune’s 19-0 shutout, Saturday at the New Kapa‘a Town Park.
Although working with the 10-run rule, the Menehune extended play through the seventh inning, driving home 10 runs on seven hits in the final frame.
Earlier, Koerte picked up the win on the hill as the Menehune took a 9-2 win over Kapa‘a in the opener of the Saturday doubleheader.
Facing a 9-0 deficit in the seventh inning of the opener, Larae Hoopi‘i and H. Leasiolagi scored for Kapa‘a in the final frame, Hoopi‘i getting aboard on a single and Leasiolagi getting first on a fielder’s choice.
Waimea opened the books early, pushing three runs across in the first inning on just one hit, a single from catcher Kawehi Ephan. MarieBeth Watanabe and Krysta Kali both scored after getting aboard on Warrior miscues and Ephan crossed for the final run in the frame.
Kali, getting two hits in the first outing, scored three times followed by Ephan, also bagging two hits, scoring twice.
Ulu Matagiese, finishing 2 for 4 in the box, snagged a single and a triple, scoring once.
Koerte gave up six hits in the first game before settling in for a one-hitter in Game 2. She also struck out one and walked two on the hill.
With the Saturday wins, Waimea is undefeated at 3-0 and will next face Kaua‘i in a doubleheader, March 27 at Isenberg Park starting at 10 a.m.
Kaua‘i (2-1) travels to the New Kapa‘a Town Park for a single game, Wednesday starting at 5:30 p.m.
