LIHU‘E — An informational briefing with state legislators on the proposed reorganization of the state Department of Human Services is Friday at 5 p.m. in the Kaua‘i Community College cafeteria.
Representatives from the state House Committee on Human Services and Committee on Housing are expected to attend.
State Rep. Rida Cabanilla, D-Waipahu-‘Ewa, is chair of the Committee on Housing, and state Rep. John Mizuno, D-Kalihi Valley-Fort Shafter, is chair of the Committee on Human Services.
State Rep. Jimmy Tokioka, D-Koloa-Lihu‘e-Wailua, will be attending, according to Amy Luke, his office manager.
Also invited are state Reps. Roland Sagum, D-Po‘ipu-Waimea-Ni‘ihau; and Mina Morita, Kapa‘a-Hanalei, who are both members of the Committee on Housing.
According to the meeting notice, the purpose of the briefing is to review the proposed reduction of services by DHS and ascertain the adverse impact the reduction may have on families, individuals, the disabled, the elderly, and DHS workers.
Several issues concerning the following will also be discussed by the Committee on Housing: housing credit checks, housing wait list focus shifts, housing rental late-payment evictions, and housing poverty-level discrimination, the notice states.
Invited have been leaders of DHS, the Hawai‘i Government Employees Association, current and former DHS employees, providers of services, and others concerned about or affected by the possible impact of the reduction in services at DHS, as well as issues relating to housing, according to the meeting notice.
