Just what the KIUC board needs
Pat Gegen and Carol Bain are just what the KIUC board needs.
Pat Gegen is an honest, no-nonsense guy who puts action where his experience and concerns are. Pat has 13 years of experience in the energy field including with the kind of equipment that KIUC still makes use of, but Pat also has installed renewable energy generating equipment on his own property. Further Pat Gegen is one of the few people who attends almost all of the KIUC Board meetings to follow the deliberations and decisions of the Board. On merit, we believe Pat Gegen should be voted onto the KIUC Board. We believe he will make the right kinds of decisions on that Board.
Carol Bain has been a proactive member of the KIUC Board for the past 3 years. Carol’s participation on the Board has been as a “team member,” and yet she remains committed to energy conservation and renewable solutions. Carol Bain has also been a leading voice for transparency and fair process on the Board. Further, Carol and her husband Ed, are techies at heart and have found neat ways to bring renewable technology into their home and daily lives, again a true indication of her leanings. On experience and record, we believe Carol Bain should be re-elected to the KIUC Board.
The KIUC Board of Directors election ends on March 27. If you are a KIUC member/ratepayer, do vote.

Pay attention when driving
Traffic fatalities are certainly a tragedy. And driving to fast can certainly be a cause. But there are many other factors that contribute to un-safe driving.
I keep waiting for the powers that be to start talking about these other factors. Mostly what I hear is slow down, and don’t use electronic devices.
The most important factors in safe driving are paying attention and going with the flow of traffic. Unfortunately many people have heard slow down so many times that they will go 40 mph on the highway even if everyone else is going between 50 and 55. If the normal flow of traffic is 50 then going 40 is dangerous! A line of cars gets stacked up behind the slow moving car and some of those other drivers may not be as level headed as they should be and may try passing in an un-safe manner. Granted they should not do so, and if you’re the person driving 40 mph you can pat yourself on the back and say that it wasn’t your fault, they shouldn’t have been in such a hurry, etc, etc. But the truth of the matter is that there are drivers out there that are in a hurry. Justified or not, they are there.
What we can all do to make our highways safe is to be courteous to all other drivers. If you have to drive slower than the flow of traffic, always stay to the right in passing lanes. Do not speed up in passing lanes unless you are passing. I don’t know why the police don’t stress this more. I have seen so many near disasters on our passing lanes because some drive slow in the left lane, and some drive slow in the right lane. Some drive slow, then speed up in the passing lane, then slow back down after the passing lane. And, if you must drive slower than the flow of traffic, and there is no passing lane, signal well in advance and pull over in a safe place occasionally to let the other cars go by.
So, pay close attention, drive with the flow of traffic, be courteous to other drivers and help those who want to pass, pass safely. We will all be safer for it.

I believe that KIUC needs to move much faster towards renewable energy generation and more open communication with its members.
That gag rule that prevents board members from speaking without written permission has got to go! If you too would like to see alternative energy projects and open communication in the near future, please vote for Pat Gegen, Carol Bain and Jan TenBruggencate.
Pat Gegen has 14 years experience in the energy field, currently consulting on the Honolulu Sea Water Air Conditioning project. I am impressed with his friendly, “can do” attitude. He was instrumental in setting up the Kalaheo landfill meetings, is Kalaheo School PTSA president, and has been attending KIUC meetings for the past year. He also walks his talk, owning a hybrid and installing a windmill at his home.
Carol Bain’s record speaks for itself. She has been supporting renewable energy in urgency and open communication for the past three years as a board member. I hear she drives that electric car around Lihu‘e.
Jan TenBruggencate has much knowledge to share as the former science writer for the Honolulu Advertiser. He just installed more PV on his roof this week.
Although these candidates are not supported by the establishment, that’s all the more reason we need them. We are lucky to currently have Ben Sullivan, who previously headed Apollo Kaua‘i, serving on the board, but he needs help. Please vote for Pat Gegen, Carol Bain, and Jan TenBruggencate for KIUC Board of Directors.
