PUHI — Island School tennis swept its series against Kapa‘a Saturday, taking the boys matches 3-2 and getting the girls matches 3-2 at the Kaua‘i Community College courts.
Hampered by the SAT tests which pushed the matches back to noon, the matches started without the top divisions as players were making their way to the courts.
Chas Okamoto, a winner over Kaua‘i last week, continued his win streak with a 6-0, 6-0 victory over Island School’s Jeremy Randolph-Flagg in the Boys No. 1 Singles.
But Island School, starting with its No. 2 Boys Singles, got Ryan Perez taking down August Trumm 6-2, 6-2 despite the strong fan support for Trumm.
Sam Dunham teamed with Logan Domingo, coming off a nice showing in the Boys Long Jump at the Mayor’s track meet, to defeat the Warrior team of Anthony Lopez and Chris Wong 6-2, 6-2 in the No. 1 Boys Doubles.
Kapa‘a’s Elliott Haigh teamed with Hunter Bilbo in the No. 2 Boys Doubles to take down Dylan Morrison-Fogel and Larry Miller of Island School 6-4, 4-6, 6-4, and in the No. 3 Boys Doubles, Jason Manzano teamed with Ben Steuri to get past the Kapa‘a duo of Ryan Lopez and Reggie Agaran 6-3, 6-2.
Island School’s Madison Duarte took three sets to defeat Kapa‘a’s Makena McCluskey 6-1, 1-6, 7-5 in the Girls No. 1 Singles.
Alexsis Valdez was quick in her returns and mixed her serves to edge out Island’s April Oo 6-3, 1-6, 6-4 in the Girls No. 2 Singles that started out the day.
The Kapa‘a duo of Kaylie Nakamura and Jazzerie Taeza, victimized by the Raider No. 1 Girls doubles last week, came back to defeat the Island School pair of Meghan Perius and Sara Loreti 6-1, 6-2 in the Girls No. 1 doubles.
Stephanie Steuri, whose brother Ben enjoyed a victory in the Boys doubles, teamed with Haley Uliana in the Girls No. 2 Doubles to defeat the Kapa‘a pair of Taetra Christensen and Nicole Deyeri 6-1, 6-2.
Island School team captain Kathryn Hoban teamed with Genevera Sardos-Albertini, an exchange student from Italy, to get past the Kapa‘a pair of Kara Lee Higa and Sachi Detreaux 6-0, 7-6 (7-4) in the Girls No. 3 Doubles.
Due to the spring break, the next Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation tennis matches will see Island School visiting Kaua‘i High School at the Kaua‘i Lagoons courts on March 27 while Kapa‘a hosts Waimea.
The Kaua‘i-Island School matches are scheduled to start at noon and the Kapa‘a-Waimea matches are scheduled to start at 10 a.m.
