The funny thing about Ireland’s most famous holiday is that St. Patrick was actually English, and was never officially canonized by a Pope. He was captured at the age of 14 by Irish raiders, and after six years of enslavement he escaped and returned home. Later, as an ordained bishop, he returned to Ireland, where he spent the rest of his days.
