The threat of a tsunami could not stop the tennis players from helping the Kaua‘i United Way while getting in some play time at the Po‘ipu Kai Tennis courts.
“We were still able to hold and finish the event after the tsunami all-clear was given,” said Krystyna Noe, an organizer of the Po‘ipu Kai Charity Tennis Tournament.
Jordan Kukino and Brant Fuchigami topped the Men’s doubles “A” division by getting past the team of Gary Joseph and James Hasenyager, 6-3, 7-6 (7-5).
Adrian Alvarez and Charlie Ortiz took three sets to earn the “B” division over Ty Okihara, a Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation standout, and Clifton Kukino, 6-4, 2-6, 1-0 (10-8).
B.J. Kai teamed with Peter Nguyen for the “C” division over the efforts of James Honda and Ryan Kakuda, 3-6, 6-2, 1-0 (10-5).
Jamie Honda and Lani Rae Green teamed to take the “A” division of Women’s Doubles over Sarah Kukino, a strong Kaua‘i High School player, and Michelle Martinez, 6-4, 6-4.
Mari Anderson and Judy Honda topped Ginger Allen and Makenna McCluskey, 6-2, 6-4 for the “B” division and Miriam Perlmutter and Sonya Kunz took three sets to earn the “C” division title over Kris Ferguson and Rachel Arii, 7-6, 4-6, 1-0 (10-5).
Noe said the tournament is sponsored by Po‘ipu Kai Association, the Kaua‘i District Tennis Association and the Grand Hyatt Kaua‘i Resort and Spa.
This is the first of five tournaments where all the proceeds will benefit the Kaua‘i United Way.
The next scheduled charity tournament will be played on May 1 and 2.
