LIHU‘E — Determined to make the proposed unemployment tax hike its “number one issue,” the Kaua‘i Chamber of Commerce’s goal since September has been to “keep businesses in business,” said President Randy Francisco.
“How can a business that has already cut back on everything it can afford this huge a hit?” he asked regarding the projected $1,000 jump in unemployment taxes per employee set to begin in April.
The proposed $630 “would not be so impactful it would harm businesses to the point of closing or laying off,” Francisco said.
The bill is “moving faster than a lighting rod. It’s unlike anything we’ve seen,” Francisco said.
So far, about 20 local businesses have submitted testimony in reference to HB 2169.
