LIHU‘E — In light of the recent tsunami warning, county officials are urging residents and businesses who have not yet signed up for Connect CTY, the county’s free mass notification service, to do so.
Officials utilized Connect CTY last Saturday at around 5:45 a.m. to notify residents and businesses who had signed-up for the service about the tsunami threat and later notified the same people about the tsunami cancellation notice, a county news release states.
“I strongly encourage those who haven’t had a chance to sign for Connect CTY yet to please do so as this will enable them to receive important information at any given time,” Mayor Bernard Carvalho Jr. said in the release. “I also want to remind residents or businesses whose published phone numbers have changed within the past year to call us and let us know what their current number is so we can update our files.”
Although all publicly available residential and business phones on Kaua’i are included in the county’s Connect-CTY system, along with those who have signed up for the service, any changes should be reported to the County.
In addition, anyone wanting to include alternate means of contact in their file may add their cell phone number, text device/pager and e-mail information to the Connect-CTY system for an even greater chance of being contacted should they be away from their land line.
“We are constantly looking at ways to enhance communications with our residents,” said the mayor. “I am very pleased that Connect CTY enabled us to reach out and quickly inform thousands of our residents about Saturday’s tsunami threat. This service augmented other venues of public notification, such as news releases, radio and television interviews and the Internet.”
Connect CTY is designed to quickly inform residents and businesses about civil defense emergencies including: tsunamis; hurricanes; earthquakes; flash floods; and any other situation that could impact the safety, property, or welfare of residents and visitors.
