2 victories; Iwata notches first hit
The University of Hawai‘i softball team opened the 2010 Louisville-Slugger Desert Classic with an 11-8 win over previously undefeated Utah (5-1) at Eller Media Stadium in Las Vegas.
The ‘Bows erased an early, five-run deficit with the help of three home runs, while Stephanie Ricketts (2-2) earned her second win of the season with a complete game effort.
The ‘Bows took a 7-5 lead after trailing 5-0, but again trailed 8-7 in the fifth inning.
They managed to bring four runs across the plate in the bottom of the fifth, including a two-run home run by Jenna Rodriguez.
That victory put UH at 4-2 on the young season.
It then had a much more one-sided victory in the day’s second game, an 11-0 victory over UNLV that included five homers.
Melissa Gonzalez and Alex Aguirre each smacked two and Kaia Parnaby had the other blast.
The game also featured the first collegiate hit for Kaua‘i High School graduate and freshman shortstop, Jessica Iwata.
Iwata had a two-out double in the third inning, extending the inning for Aguirre to come up to the plate and hit her first dinger of the night.
Iwata went 1 for 2 with a run and a walk for the now 5-2 Hawai‘i squad.
