LIHU‘E — The first Power Volleyball tournament opened at Kaua‘i High School gym and the Chiefess Kamakahelei Middle School, Saturday.
“This is for all the Kaua‘i volleyball players,” said Wayne Doliente, an instructor with the Po‘okela Volleyball Club. “It’s played under USA Volleyball format with the older division players at Kaua‘i and the younger players at the CKMS.”
An attendant at the scorer’s table said four of the Kaua‘i volleyball clubs were participating in the first of several Power Volleyball tournaments scheduled between now and the summer.
Po‘okela was taking on Ho‘oikaika from the Westside in a 16s matchup. Kiakaki, a traveling squad playing “competitively,” and Pu‘uwai from Kapa‘a rounded out the programs fielding teams in the various age groupings for the tournament that started at 8 a.m. and ran through 2 p.m.
Organizers did a good job getting the tournament to have the same ambiance and flavor of bigger tournaments such as the Kaua‘i Challenge with players and officials following tournament guidelines and parents and relatives having the same enthusiasm as bigger tournament plays.
“This is just so the Kaua‘i players can play and get a feel for tournament play,” Doliente said.
The scoring table official said they would love to have some boy players, but unfortunately, there are only girls signed up to play.
Future Power Volleyball tournaments are scheduled for March 6 at the Kaua‘i High School gym, March 27 at the Kapa‘a High School gym, April 17 at Waimea and May 8 at the Kapa‘a High School gym.
The tournament also sets the stage for the opening of the Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation boys volleyball season which will open March 24 when Kaua‘i hosts Kapa‘a starting with the Junior Varsity matches hitting at 5:30 p.m. Waimea will host Island in a single match on that date starting at 6:30 p.m.
KIF boys volleyball games will be played on Wednesdays and Saturdays.
