LIHU‘E — After losing their Thursday opener in the Oceanic Time Warner Cable Paradise Classic, the University of Hawai‘i softball team split its two games Friday night, knocking off Texas A&M-Corpus Christi before falling to No. 10 Stanford in the nightcap on O‘ahu.
The Rainbow Wahine started off the day with a strong all-around performance, knocking off Texas A&M-CC by a 9-0 score in five innings.
Catcher Katie Grimes led the offense, going 3-for-3 with four RBIs, including a game-ending, three-run home run in the bottom of the fifth.
Melissa Gonzalez and Traci Yoshikawa each had two hits and freshman Kelly Majam knocked out a two-run homer.
Kaia Parnaby was dominant on the mound, giving up just two hits and three walks while striking out 10 in her five innings of work.
The second game proved to be much tougher, as Hawai‘i managed just one hit against Stanford pitcher Ashley Chinn.
Chinn struck out 10 and walked three, as Stanford put up one run in the fourth inning and another in the seventh to capture a 2-0 win and move to 3-0 in round robin play.
The loss drops the ‘Bows to 1-2, but they go into today’s tournament as the No. 2 seed behind Stanford and will take on No. 3 McNeese State at 10 a.m.
McNeese State got a 2-0 win over Hawai‘i in Thursday’s opener.
Stanford and Texas A&M-CC will then get underway at 12 p.m.
The losers of those two games will play at 2 p.m., with the winners facing off in the championship game at 4 p.m.
Television broadcast will be handled by KFVE-TV. Rebroadcast is set for 10:30 p.m.
