LIHU‘E — Fresh off his return from New Zealand as a member of the Hawai‘i junior surf squad at the ISA World Junior Surf Championships, Kaimana Jaquias took first place in the Junior Men’s Shortboard division at the Hawaiian Surfing Federation Kaua‘i’s third contest of the season.
Event No. 3 at Kekaha Beach’s Intersections was held Saturday and Sunday with nine different divisions of surfers competing for points.
The top finish for Jaquias bumps him up into fourth place in the Junior Men’s Shortboard season standings, having only competed in two of the three contests.
He also took third in the Open Men’s Shortboard division and sits in sixth place in those season totals.
Aaron Swanson, a first-time participant in this season’s contests, took first place in the Open Men’s Shortboard division, followed by Chatson Barrett, Jaquias and Christian Graham rounding out the top four.
Swanson had two first-place finishes, also grabbing the top spot in the 4-A Open division, finishing ahead of Jesse Guglielmana, Kyle Maligro and Kelly Hunt.
Guglielmana now has two firsts and one second in the three contests this season, already clinching the best overall score in 4-A.
The Girl’s Shortboard division was won by Tatiana Weston-Webb, who also has a commanding lead in the season standings.
Brianna Cope finished second, while Lianna Patey and Kiana Fores finished in third and fourth, respectively.
Fores finished first in the contest’s only longboard event, beating out Weston-Webb, Patey and Shania Weiss in the rest of the top four.
The Menehune Shortboard division title was taken by Kuio Young for his first top finish of the season.
Kai McIntyre took second place and Luke McCullough was third. Mainei Kinimaka, who has the top total so far this season, was fourth, while Kainehe Hunt took fifth.
The Boy’s Shortboard division was won by Kalen Galtes, followed by Lucas Angulo, Tabin Shamblin and Daniel Carter.
In one of two bodyboarding divisions of the weekend, Keanu Malama took first place in the Boy’s division, followed by Eli Duar, Carter and Shamblin.
The Junior Bodyboarding division was won by Matthew Holzman, who nudged just ahead of Kaimana Wong for first place this season with the win.
Kainoa French took second place, Storm Magnasay third and Wong finished in fourth.
The final event of the season will take place on April 3-4 at Kealia Beach.
