One night before her 16th birthday, Lauren Claypoole netted a game-high 18 points to lead Island girls basketball to a 38-14 edge over the Kapa‘a Junior Varsity ladies, Tuesday night.
Krystal Christian, whose sister Layna is one of the drivers for the Kapa‘a varsity girls team, topped the Warrior scoring with six points in the Tuesday game played at the Bernice Hundley Gym in Kapa‘a.
Following Lauren’s lead, Alicia Becerra, one of three exchange students playing on the Island team, added six points. Autumn Warnock and Joy Claypoole each netted five points. Tessa Mason and Kelly Culliney added pairs to round out the win.
Mahina Pa, one of three pillars in the paint for Kapa‘a, followed Christian’s lead with four points. Cherrilyn Coloma finished with a pair, Mele Moala and Mana Mandonaola each added digits in the effort.
With the win, Island improved to 9-1 on the season and traveled to the Kaua‘i High School gym, Friday evening to take on the Kaua‘i High School Junior Raiders, which earned the KIF championship with a 6-1 record in regular season play.
Results from that contest were unavailable at press time.
Cheryl Claypoole, the Island coach, said Island will play one more make-up game, Tuesday night at Island School against Kapa‘a.
