State of the art diagnostic services dedicated to women and the early detection of breast cancer are now available only at West Kauai Medical Center in Waimea, a news release says.
Last week the ability to perform stereotactic biopsy at the time of a mammography became a much anticipated reality.
The clear, sharp digital mammogram images are immediately available for the radiologist to review and diagnose. If a biopsy is needed, the stereo-tactic unit allows the doctor to place a core biopsy needle into the mass taking a specimen for the laboratory to analyze without surgery. This provides the patient and their doctor fast results without surgery. Only if the laboratory results show positive for cancer, then and only then does the patient have to be faced with decision to undergo surgery.
Digital images give the radiologist the ability to view on high-resolution computer monitors that enhance visualization of the structures within the breast tissue. They can also adjust brightness and contrast, zooming in on specific areas to help detect small calcifications, masses, and other changes in tissue.
From the patient’s point of view, physically, a digital mammography procedure is like traditional film screen mammography except the resulting digital image is higher quality and available immediately for review and diagnosis. There is no wait for film to be developed and reduced need for repeat exams due to under/over exposure of the film. The images are also easily stored and transferred electronically for consultation with other doctors as needed.
