KALAHEO — Mariyah Oliver scored 10 points and Pili Chung netted seven points to lead the Kaulupono Girls and Kamikaze to victories in the county’s 13 and Under girls basketball league, Thursday at the Kalaheo Neighborhood Center.
With the Thursday night win, Kaulupono Girls hold the lead with an undefeated record following its 24-15 win over the Angels.
The Kamikaze posted a 17-9 edge over a tenacious Westside team in the opener of the Thursday night double-header, Chung and center Shaylee Huni combining for 13 of the redshirts’ game-total 17 points.
Lele Silva and Gilian Gregoria each added a pair from their low post position.
Caitlynn Owen and Tianalee Apilado each finished with three points, belying the hustle and strenght the Westside Girls put forth in the effort.
The Westside Girls game centered around the hustle and court sense of both Owen and Alyssa Miyamoto, but were edged out by the height advantage anchored by Kamikaze center Huni and low posts Silva and Gregoria with Chung’s quickness plauging the Westside purpleshirts in open court.
Miyamoto finished with a pair and a digit from Brandee Burton rounded out the Westside effort.
Following Oliver in the Kaulupono win, Nicole Palacio, being egged on for a three-ball by the Papalina Basketball Club players, finished with five points (no treys) and Kaelyn Aquino-Kamakele adding four points, most in heavy Angel defensive traffic.
Kekai Gonsalves, drawing the attention of PBC player Tystin Gummerus for her ball handling abilities on the court, topped the Angels’ scoring with five points, including a late-game three-ball that brought the fans to life.
But that effort came too late.
Shayanne Almarza followed Gonsalves’ lead with four points. Pairs from Violet Martin, Heu-Lupe Langi and Analeigna Toloai rounded out the effort.
The county’s 13 and Under league continues with the boys taking the court, Saturday at the Kilauea Neighborhood Center starting at 10 a.m. when Hanakila hosts the Wailua Boyz. Papalina-Grey will face the Kaua‘i Ballers starting at 11 a.m.
