LIHU‘E — A portable classroom at Wilcox Elementary School was saved from destruction Wednesday night due to quick action by a resident who lives across from the school, a county press release states.
At around 9 p.m., Herbert Honjo, who resides on Hardy Street, saw what he initially thought were flickering lights behind the portable.
Honjo quickly realized that it was actually a fire and ran across the street. Using a garden hose located next to the portable, he doused the fire.
Police were dispatched to the scene. When they arrived, they found that the fire had been completely extinguished.
An investigation as to the cause of the fire is underway.
Damages to the entry deck, door and a window of the portable are estimated at $3,000.
