NAWILIWILI — Steve Spears, director for the Kaua‘i Habitat for Humanity, made a stop at the Young Brothers Nawiliwili Port office en route to his journey to Princeville, Friday morning.
Avery Welken, the Americorps VISTA Resource Development coordinator, said Spears was going to accept a contribution from a donor in Princeville which will enable them to store tools and supplies for their projects.
Young Brothers Community Advisory Board bolstered that effort with a grant which will provide for tool storage, Welken said.
“This grant is going to help us get the second 100 houses faster than the first 100 houses,” Spears said.
Welken said the grant will go towards outfitting a tool storage container so Kaua‘i Habitat for Humanity can start work on 10 new sites in Anahola scheduled to start later this year.
Janis Benn, the volunteer coordinator for Kaua‘i Habitat for Humanity, said volunteer help is always welcomed at either the ReStore thrift store, the Hanapepe facility, or at any of the home sites under construction.
Benn said one of the opportunities for volunteers is the Disney Park’s “Give A Day, Get A Day” program where once the volunteering is completed, volunteers get a one day admission to a Walt Disney World or Disneyland theme park this year.
As part of the Disney Park promotion, the ReStore will be accepting youth volunteers from 11 to 17 years old when working with their parents or guardians.
Youth volunteers can spend a day helping to clean the store, hanging clothes, sorting books, displaying toys and organizing contributions to earn a free entry into the Disney parks.
“We’ve had a very busy start of the year,” Benn said in an e-mail. “With the weather so cold on the Mainland, we have been blessed with people wanting to escape to Kaua‘i and spend time helping build homes.”
Recently, 20 volunteers from the Mainland spent a week here working with the Kaua‘i Habitat for Humanity. During that time, the volunteers were able to get a carport erected at one of the Moi Road sites in Hanapepe as well as revamp the ReStore.
Benn said this was the last Global Village group scheduled for a while so local volunteers are needed to help build homes.
