Is it just me or did 2009 go by in the blink of an eye?
I guess time flies when you’re having fun. But it also flies when you’re not paying attention.
Whether I’m mulling over the past or contemplating the future, it is a never-ending battle to get my mind to stay steady at what lies directly in front of me.
I cannot tell you how many times last year I sat on the beach watching the waves gently lap the shore while my thoughts took me somewhere else. Or the countless times I’ve had lunch with family or friends, but was consumed about the grocery list I forgot to pack in my bag or the amount of time it would take me to drive from Kapa‘a to Lihu‘e before I could get home in time to make dinner.
So, my New Year’s resolution — which I admit, has been ongoing for awhile now — is remembering to live in the moment.
Rather than simply being physically present while my mind is speeding off in another direction, I sincerely want to pay undivided attentive to each and every moment. I’m sure I’ll be surprised at how much I’ve been missing.
Being fully present is a task — especially in a society where we constantly believe we have so much to do and are plugged into every electrical outlet possible — but it is something we all have the freedom to aspire toward.
Whether it takes another year or another decade, I hope to clear my head even further of any background noise which hums in the opposite direction of where I presently am.
I’m certain there will be a lot of friendly nudges to myself this year, reminding me to cherish my time here while it lasts. Because without the present moment, what more do we really have?
