LIHU‘E — County officials are encouraging residents to recycle their Christmas trees.
“It requires little effort, yet the impact on our island is tremendous,” said Mayor Bernard Carvalho Jr. in a news release. “If everyone recycles their trees, tons of green waste would be diverted from our landfill, and the compost generated from this can be used to fertilize other trees and plants.”
Christmas trees are accepted for recycling daily except on holidays at the Hanalei, Hanapepe, Kapa‘a and Lihu‘e refuse transfer stations, 7:15 a.m. to 5:15 p.m., and the Kekaha Landfill, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.
A drop-off point for trees is also located outside the main entrance to Kaua‘i Nursery and Landscaping on Kaumuali‘i Highway in Puhi seven days a week.
All trees must be free of flocking, tinsel and ornaments when they are brought to the recycling locations.
