LIHU‘E — Although it definitely won’t be up that long, the Island School student mural gracing the construction wall of the Lihu‘e McDonald’s restaurant on Kuhio Highway is done in paint that has a lifetime warranty.
Between four and five gallons of Sherwin-Williams paint — a quick-drying, moisture-guard exterior mix — was donated to the cause after the students’ first effort was the victim of Thanksgiving weekend’s torrential rains.
Adam Burns, manager of the Sherwin-Williams store in the Puhi Industrial Park, donated the paint, valued at around $200, and mixed the colors, after some mutual friends at Island School put him in touch with Penny Nichols, an Island School art teacher.
“We just wanted to help, and let all their hard work stay there,” said Burns. “We try to help out wherever we can.”
Burns said the first mural, which was damaged by rain and had to be taken down, was probably done using interior paint.
The new mural was secured onto the construction wall in late December.
“With the help of hard-working volunteers, the damaged McDonald’s mural was repainted in one day, all 32 feet of it,” said Nichols.
“Students from kindergarten through high school, as well as parents and teachers, collaborated on the project,” she said.
“It was re-installed at the McDonald’s job site last week, along with the beautiful elementary school mural, which was just completed and hung for the first time,” she said.
“This was a mural that took a village to complete,” she said.
The renovated McDonald’s restaurant is scheduled to open in spring 2010.
