NAWILIWILI — When Margaret Loo arrived for the scholarship presentation, Kapena Kinimaka had a surprise for her, Wednesday, at the Kaua‘i Marriott Resort and Beach Club.
Kristy Kinimaka was the first recipient of the Jeffery Kalima Loo scholarship.
Kapena Kinimaka said Kai Malie Kinimaka, who was brought over to Kukui’s Restaurant to meet Loo, was born in September and he was proud to show off the newborn.
Loo was on hand to present the Jeffery Kalima Loo Memorial Scholarships to two Kaua‘i recipients, Micah Hee and Kristy Kurokawa during a special luncheon honoring the scholarship recipients and their families as well as the managers of the Marriott Kaua‘i ‘Ohana.
Brad Snyder, manager of the Kaua‘i Lagoons, said Jeffery Loo was employed with the Human Resources Department of the Marriott when it opened on Kaua‘i.
“During that time, the Marriott was not that well known, and Jeffery’s efforts at getting the community to become acquainted with the new resort led to the success the Marriott ‘Ohana enjoys today,” Snyder said. “Unfortunately, he passed away shortly after the Kaua‘i Marriott opened and the scholarship fund was formed to honor his memory and efforts with the Marriott.”
Joining the group were Micah’s parents, Henry Hee and Pam Jardin, Kristy’s mother, Nancy Kurokawa, and brother, Brandon Kurokawa, Steve Yannarell, manager of the Marriott’s Waiohai Beach Club, Elliot Mills, manager of the Kaua‘i Marriott Resort and Beach Club, and Snyder. Also joining the group Chuck Brady represented the Human Resources departments of the Marriott ‘ohana.
