Federal Web sites havemonk seal information

LIHU‘E — A variety of federal Web sites have information on the endangered Hawaiian monk seal, a spokesperson said.

Jeff Walters, Hawaiian monk seal recovery coordinator for the National Marine Fisheries Service of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration in the Pacific Islands Regional Office, said the island monk seal watch program referred to in the seal-bites-woman story Sunday, www.kauaimonkseal.com, is not affiliated with the federal agency responsible for monk seal conservation and management.

Walters said for accurate and up-to-date information that has been reviewed and approved by NOAA, he recommends the following Web sites: www.fpir.noaa.gov/PRD/prd_hawaiian_monk_seal.html, www.nmfs.hawaii.edu/psd/mmrp/monkseals.php, www.nmfs.noaa.gov/pr/species/mammals/pinnipeds/hawaiianmonkseal.htm.
