Editor’s note: From now through Dec. 24, The Garden Island will share stories of families who could use a little holiday cheer along with an appeal for monetary donations of any size. Funds raised will be distributed to needy families by Zonta Club members, who purchase gift certificates at appropriate businesses to help make these simple wishes come true. Because of logistical limitations, only monetary donations can be accepted.
Rica could use some milk
Rica is a 78-year-old woman who lives alone and is receiving Social Security as income. She is fragile because she is suffering from dementia, arthritis, high blood pressure and high cholesterol. Because she doesn’t cook, she is getting home-delivered meals. She is also suffering from incontinence problems. Ensure milk and adult underwear assistance would help Rica during the holiday season. (G33)
Lily would like a walker
Lily is an elderly who lives by herself. She is suffering from diabetes, vision and leg problems. She is also homebound and is getting home-delivered meals. She has a hard time walking so she would be very happy if she would get a walker, as well as new beddings and linens this holiday season. (G34)
Elderly couple needs food
Tom and Alice are elderly. Both are homebound and are receiving meals-on-wheels. They are on fixed income from Social Security, Tom stuffers from high blood pressure and high cholesterol. Alice suffered from a stoke. Their holidays would be brightened if they have help in getting their food. (G35)
Irina would appreciate Assurance
Irina is an elderly woman who must rely on her scooter chair to get around in her home. She has trouble getting to the bathroom in time, so she has been using “Assurance” adult diapers. Her supply tends to run low, since she cannot go shopping on her own, and stores usually do not stock up enough for her to buy many packs at once. She would greatly appreciate several packs of Extra-Large Assurance. (G36)
Elizabeth could use new clothes
Elisabeth lives by herself, and just started receiving social security. Her meager income makes living hard on her. She recently had to request assistance for some expenses too. She usually spends her mornings at the senior center for elderly people. Her holidays would be enlightening if she could have some new clothes. (G37)
New stove for Marina
Marina is a client for home-delivered meals. For breakfast and lunch, she cannot cook much because her stove is so old, only one burner still works. It will only be a matter of time before the last burner breaks downs, and will need a new stove. For the holidays she would be extremely grateful to have a new stove to cook for her live-in grandson and herself. (G38)
Beth would like a boogie board
Beth is a young teen who has a lot of energy and loves to spend her free time swimming, running and doing other types of sport activities. She has recently moved from her grandparent’s house to her aunt’s home in Wailua Houselots and has a hard time adjusting. A boogie board would be a great gift to keep her occupied since she can walk to the beach on the weekends. (G39)
Bowling ball for CC
CC is a middle school student who can be very disrespectful at times. She is also very hyperactive and has a stubborn side to her when she doesn’t want to do her homework. After a few months with the after school program her disposition has improved and she has actively participated in the program which provides substance abuse education and activities. CC has enjoyed her outings to the bowling alley and her scores have improved. A bowling ball and shoes for her would help to encourage her to pursue bowling as a positive activity on a regular basis, maybe even to join a youth bowling league. (G41)
