KAPA‘A — The Kapa‘a Warriors earned their second victory of the 2009-10 KIF soccer season with a 4-1 win over the Waimea Menehune, Wednesday afternoon at the New Kapa‘a Town Park field.
After a closely-contested first half that saw the teams head to halftime tied at 1-1, Kapa‘a opened up its attack in the second half and was able to score three times to create the final margin.
The Warriors opened the scorebooks early in the first half, when they were able to take advantage of a penalty kick. Kaisen Carrillo’s successful attempt gave Kapa‘a the early 1-0 edge.
The action went back and forth for a good portion of the half until Waimea had a throw-in deep in Kapa‘a territory. The line-drive throw went into the box and was hit by defender Max Goode with his upper arm. The handball resulted in a Waimea penalty kick attempt.
Joshua Quinlan lined up the shot and put it into the right corner of the net, evening the contest at one goal apiece.
The Menehune threatened to grab the lead on another long throw-in, which was headed on net by Quinlan, but saved by the Warrior goalie.
Kapa‘a also had its own opportunities to seize control before intermission. The first such instance occurred when a strong goal kick was headed forward by Kaisen Carrillo to a streaking Max Drubba. He gathered the ball and had a one-on-one run at the goalie, but his shot sailed wide right.
Kapa‘a grabbed control after a foul was called on Waimea’s Moses Fierro just outside the box. Hunter Hudson took the free kick from the left side, which got deflected to the back post, where Kanoa Nartatez finished the play off with a header for a 2-1 advantage.
The Warriors’ third goal was a picture-perfect sequence as Drubba sent a pass down the left sideline, which was gathered by Matt Domingcil. He then sent a cross to the back post, where Cole Pemberton scored with his left foot to give Kapa‘a a two-goal lead.
It would add the final goal when Drubba again started the sequence by sending a deep ball toward the Waimea goal. The goalie came out to challenge and slid to try to corral possession, but the ball bounced by him and Lowen Gonzales put it into the back of the net for the finishing touch.
In the other boys action, Island notched a 1-0 win over the Kaua‘i Red Raiders at Island School.
The game’s lone goal was scored by Michael Chamberlain on a shot that made its way over the Kaua‘i goalkeeper and into the back right corner of the net.
Island (1-2) will face Waimea (2-1) at 10 a.m. Saturday at Hanapepe Stadium.
Kaua‘i (1-2) will be on the road again to face Kapa‘a (2-1) at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at the New Kapa‘a Town Park.
In varsity girls action, the Kapa‘a Lady Warriors (2-0) pitched a 10-0 shutout over Waimea (0-2), getting four goals from Dakota Barnett and three from Lily Fredrickson, who opened the scoring just over a minute into the contest.
Sierra Mayer, Laurie Tamayo and Taetra Christensen also scored for Kapa‘a, which will host Kaua‘i (1-1) at 3:30 p.m. Saturday.
