LIHU‘E — The movie “Defiance,” released in December 2008, told the tale of three brothers who courageously set up a refuge camp in the midst of the forest, saving over 1,000 lives from the evil clutches of the Nazis.
Zus Bielski was one of those heroes, endangering his life to rescue others, successfully building an entire community in the woods, along with his brothers.
Zvi Bielski, son of Zus, will be speaking on Kaua‘i today, according to a Chabad Kaua‘i press release. The event is an opportunity to hear first-hand, behind-the-scenes personal background of the historic effort.
The event will be held at 7 p.m. at Kaua‘i’s Jewish Center at the former Kula High School campus on Kapuna Road near Mile Marker 19 on Kuhio Highway near Kilauea.
The timing with Chanukah is not coincidental, Rabbi Michoel Goldman said in the release, as the holiday is where Jews “commemorate the victory of the few over the many, the righteous over the wicked, when we triumphed with light over darkness, emerging anew to rebuild.”
Chabad will kindle “The Menorah” — Hawai‘i’s giant tiki-torch menorah — at 6:30 p.m. and “nosh some hot latkes,” the release states.
