Editor’s note: From now through Dec. 24, The Garden Island will share stories of families who could use a little holiday cheer along with an appeal for monetary donations of any size. Funds raised will be distributed to needy families by Zonta Club members, who purchase gift certificates at appropriate businesses to help make these simple wishes come true. Because of logistical limitations, only monetary donations can be accepted.
A sleeping bag
for James
James has been homeless on and off for two years. He lives off his disability which is limited. So if his car breaks he needs to live in it so he can get by to get it fixed. At this time he is unable to pay rent. He really could use a new sleeping bag and clothes (G48)
New shorts for Danny
Danny has been homeless for one year now. The economy has made it so hard for Danny. One week of work and three weeks lay off. His needs are new shorts and T-shirts for when he does work. (G49)
Dean could use a frying pan
Dean moved here from Maui eight months ago thinking it would be a better economically, only to find it was the same. He has applied for many jobs with no success. He really could use a nice frying pan and some propane. As he loves to cook. (G51)
Ned needs a stove
Ned is a veteran who is awaiting his VA disability. He receives state disability at this time, which is limited. He really could use a new tent and stove as he prefers camping at this time. (G52)
Warm clothes for Kim
Kim is an elderly disabled woman living in her car. She had a HUD voucher which was taken away until our economy is good. She really could use some warm clothes and a warm sleeping bag. (G53)
Zack could use
a backpack
Zack has had a really hard time because of the economy. The last time he worked was in April when he was laid off. He really could use a new backpack and some warm clothes. (G54)
Christmas in a tent
Kaleo and his family of seven are homeless because the landlord raised the rent in the house they were staying in; they could no longer afford the rent anymore. They live off his income and will probably have to have Christmas in a tent because is it hard to find a landlord to accept such a large family and the rent to be affordable. (G55)
Help for mentally ill
Naomi has been homeless for two years. She was in a house for about three months, but lost it because of her mental illness. Unable to make it home she would just sleep on the bench. She really could use a backpack and hygiene supplies. (G56)
Sue needs some food
Sue has been homeless on and off again since the early ’90s. She has been in and out of detox, unable to change her lie for any length of time. Sue could really use a backpack and some food. (G57)
Lend homeless a hand
Joshua has been homeless most of his adult life. His mental illness keeps him from living in a house. He also has no family. He really could use some warm clothes and food. (G58)
Divorce put Martin
on the streets
Martin is homeless after going through a divorce from his wife. She got everything but the car he lives in. Martin could use some food and a backpack. (G59)
A microwave
would be nice
John has suffered from mental illness most of his adult lift. He is on disability and he moved into subsidized housing and has just had a real hard time with the system denying him his disability. He has no family connections and could use a microwave for his apartment. (G60)
Ease the suffering
Randy has suffered from mental illness most of his adult life. He has a hard time dealing with life’s hurdles. He has no family and could use some warm clothes and a backpack for keeping track of his belongings. (G61)
Help the children
Steve has been homeless with his two sons (John, 6, Ethan, 4) and two daughters (Lisa, 12, Emma, 10) for nine years now. He is too proud to stay in the homeless shelter. He asked that his children needs some new shorts, and slippers for school, and some extra food for the holidays. (G62)
Sally needs

Sally is a single woman who is in denial of her substance abuse problem. She loses all of her jobs because of this. She really could use a backpack and new clothes. (G63)
Foreclosure hurt pair
Jana and Steve have been homeless on and off for two years now. They both have a disability and are unable to work. She is awaiting surgery. They had to move out of their house because the landlord had to foreclose. (G64)
Single mom could
use a hand
Ginger is a single mother with two children. Cricket, 11, and Sam, 12. They were living with family for awhile but it was too crowded. They stayed in KEO’s shelter for 45 days, but Ginger was unable to get a job. It looked as though this Christmas will be very sad for this family. They could all use some new clothes and some food for the holiday season. (G65)
Family needs help
Patty and Tom have been homeless for over three years with a son named Joshua, 7. They are middle-aged and both on Social Security; that is limited amount. They are unable to get subsidized housing because of an old criminal record. (G66)

Kaleo suffers from alcoholism. He has had many jobs, but can’t seem to be able to stop drinking. He could use a backpack and warm clothes for the winter months. (G67)
