HONOLULU — On behalf of the people of Hawai‘i, we send our personal greetings of aloha to those of the Jewish faith who are celebrating Chanukah.
This year, the Festival of Lights begins at sundown on Dec. 11 and continues until Dec. 19. This is a special time of year to celebrate religious freedom and independence.
It is also a time to commemorate the rededication of the Temple in Jerusalem more than 2,000 years ago. With only enough oil in the sacred lamp within the Temple to last for one day, the oil continued to burn brightly for eight days.
Throughout the world, the Chanukah celebration begins by lighting the first candle of the menorah and the singing of songs. This is repeated throughout the eight days of Chanukah, adding one more candle each night as a symbol of enlightenment, hope and gratitude.
Other customs include enjoying potato latkes, as well as giving Chanukah gifts, gelt (money) and the game of spinning the dreidel with children.
During this time of year, in remembering our good health, as well as the love and support of family and friends, let us also take a moment to express our deep appreciation for our men and women in uniform, serving both at home and abroad. They have volunteered to sacrifice time with their families to serve our nation and provide a warm blanket of safety to us.
As the Jewish community in Hawai‘i celebrates Chanukah, let the continued illumination of the lamp act as a reflection of the light, and the aloha spirit, within us all. Best wishes for a joyous, peaceful and happy Chanukah!
