LIHU‘E — There will be no December meeting of the Kaua‘i/Ni‘ihau Island Burial Council, state officials said Tuesday.
There were no decision-making items planned to be on this month’s agenda, so in an effort to give the council members some time off during the holidays and to save the state some money on staff travel and other items, it was determined that a December meeting need not be held, said Phyllis “Coochie” Cayan, History and Culture Branch chief in the State Historic Preservation Division of the state Department of Land and Natural Resources.
The break will also allow the council’s two newest members, Jimmy Fujita and Debra Ruiz, to get caught up on pending issues before the council, most notably the controversial burial treatment plan on the Joseph Brescia property in Ha‘ena, Cayan said.
A 13th draft of the Brescia burial treatment plan has been prepared, but as of Tuesday only the 12th plan had been posted to the SHPD Web site, hawaii.gov/dlnr/hpd.
Cayan said she would work to get the 13th draft posted to the Web site as soon as feasible.
