LIHU‘E — Hale ‘Opio Kauai, Inc. has begun a Community Campaign to raise money to match a grant offered by Grove Farm Foundation, a news release says.
This offer will “match” up to $5,000 in donations from individuals and families from the Kaua‘i community to support Kaua‘i Teen Court. The deadline to donate to the Community Campaign is Dec. 31.
In July 2009, the Hawai‘i Judiciary cut funding to Kaua‘i Teen Court and hearings were stopped, the release says. Every year since Hale ‘Opio began KTC in 1995, 200 to 400 youth have benefited from participating. Parents frequently report to us how much of a change they see in their youth because of their experience in Kaua‘i Teen Court.
“We know these families will want to help us be able to continue to serve the community of Kaua‘i by offering Teen Court to other youth who are first time offenders. Successful completion of all sentencing requirements results in a youth not having a juvenile record, giving them a fresh start and an opportunity to make good choices,” the release says.
Donations can be mailed to Hale ‘Opio Kauai, Inc., 2959 Umi St., Lihu‘e, HI 96766 or online at www.haleopio.org. For more information, call Mary Navarro at 245-2873 x. 223.
