Kalaheo School Robotics Team conducted research on the distance food travels to get to Kaua‘i. What they discovered was the average meal travels 1500 miles from the farm to the grocery store. They recognized that moving all this food around was a waste of gas and that all this transportation was bad for the environment because it creates 30,800 tons of greenhouse gas emissions every year.
The theme for this years First Lego League Competition is transportation. Many schools across the island are participating, including Kalaheo School.
As a response to reducing the travel most food takes to reach the average table, the Kalaheo School Robotics Club seeks to identify locations of fruit stands all over the island. Help students help you eat more locally by sending an e-mail to kauaifruitstands@gmail.com to give the location of a favorite fruit stand. The local produce map of Kaua‘i will make it easy for citizens and visitors to locate local produce. The map is modeled after the Malama Kaua‘i Green Map found on-line while doing research.
