LIHU‘E — The top-seeded teams from the American Youth Soccer Organization Region 940 and Region 941 will meet for the championship of the Under 12 girls division, today at Vidinha Stadium.
The No. 1 and No. 2 girls teams from Region 940 will match up for the title of the Under 14 girls division in the second game.
Natalie Devin finished with a hat trick and Jade Murphy netted two goals to lead the Green Flash from Region 941 to a 5-1 win over the Lihu‘e Clovers in one of two Under 12 girls matches played at the North Vidinha field to open the Will Veeck tournament.
Chase Tokita nailed the sole goal for the Clovers in the second half.
With the win, the Green Flash face the Lihu‘e Strikers, who edged a hard-pressing Electrixs team, 4-2, in the second Under 12 girls game.
The Strikers wasted little time establishing themselves, netting three goals in the first half to the Electrixs’ one goal.
Kaylin Kawamura, Jacelyn Perreira and Caley Caires netted Striker goals while T. Kaneakua netted the sole Electrixs goal for the 3-1 halftime lead.
H. Grance netted a second-half goal for the Electrixs to pull the margin to 3-2, but the Strikers answered on a Perreira goal that iced the win.
Ciara Caires and Pili Chung scored first-half goals to lead the Lihu‘e Gumdrops to a 2-1 edge over Wailua, the No. 1 seeded team from Region 941. Kai‘imi Moniz netted Wailua’s sole goal. All of the scoring in that game came in the first half.
Bailey Kaneakalau netted two goals and Marissa Ruiz added one goal in the Waimea Onipa‘a 3-0 win over the Wailua Flying Bazooka Bubble Gum in the Under 14 girls nightcap under the lights of Vidinha Stadium.
Following a defensive slugfest in the first half where Wailua took control of the ball, Onipa‘a announced the second half when Ruiz found the net after taking a cross from left wing Tierra Teter, who passed the ball after taking a throw-in.
Kaneakalau found the net with less than five minutes remaining in the third quarter on a second touch shot on a corner kick in traffic.
Her second goal came in the fourth quarter when she fired, again in traffic, off a pass from Ruiz.
The Strikers and Green Flash open the action Wednesday starting at 4:30 p.m. inside Vidinha Stadium. That match will be followed by the Waimea Onipa‘a matching up against the Lihu‘e Gumdrops starting about 6:15 p.m.
