LIHU‘E — The Swim Kaua‘i Aquatics swim team finished in sixth place of the 24 teams entered at the Bill Smith Invitational Swim Meet this weekend at the Veterans’ Memorial Aquatic Center on O‘ahu. It was the second team trophy this group has earned.
Yasmine Ware was the first-place winner in the Girls 11-12 year-old division, while Emma Rausch and Anya Littlefield placed second and third, respectively, in the Girls 15-16 division.
“I was so impressed with how well our kids finished their races,” said Billy Brown, the team’s coach, in an e-mail. “It was such a positive and competitive meet for all of them.”
Sophie Britzmann, who celebrated her 14th birthday on Saturday, put up a time of 2:48.14 in the 200-yard Breaststroke to earn her first state time. On Sunday, Britzmann swam a 1:19.82 in the 100-yard Breaststroke for her second state time.
In the 50-yard Freestyle, Maliana Kaui notched her first state time with a swim of 28.90 seconds.
Aaron Pigott, 17, earned state times in the 100-yard Backstroke (1:06.49) and 50-yard Freestyle (24.94). Justin White, 12, also took a state time in the 100-yard Backstroke (1:17.91).
The brother-sister duo of Jack, 9, and Kate Machorek, 11, were each able to notch state times in the 100-yard Freestyle event. Jack touched the wall in 1:16.88 and Kate in 1:03.43.
Chelsea Chock, 16, James Papa, 13, Amber Hopkins, 12, and Tambrina Fairbanks, 13, all achieved new Hawai‘i AA time standards during the meet. Fairbanks had a particularly strong showing in the 200-yard Breaststroke, cutting 14.67 seconds off her previous personal best.
Tyler Keith, 13, and Sinead Sims, 18, had strong showings, with many new best times in their events.
The 11-12 year-old girls relay team of Hopkins, Kaui, Machorek and Ware managed a second-place finish in the 200-yard Medley Relay, as well as a third in the 200-yard Freestyle Relay.
