LIHU‘E — Halloween and Sunday combined to present a reason to get on a motorcycle and ride, said Russell Haluapo, organizer of the third annual Halloween Biker Run and Monster Mash Biker Bash.
“We don’t really need a reason to ride, but since there was nothing going on, we just figured we’d get together and enjoy a ride,” he said. “When was the last time you went out to the Dry Cave in Ha‘ena?”
About 50 motorcycle riders took Haluapo up on the invitation to ride out to the North Shore and return for a party at Rob’s Goodtimes Grill.
“We didn’t have anything going on Saturday night so we thought about what to wear,” said Thomas Awong who was garbed as “The Ghost Rider.” He said the costume was put together from various items they had on hand.
“I already got the leathers, the mask is from a skeleton so we just went to buy the (plastic) chain and sprayed it silver. It was pretty easy,” he said.
Haluapo said the $5 entry per motorcycle was all put together to get an extra platter or two once the ride was done.
“No one is going to get rich on this one. It’s just a chance to get out and feel the wind on your face,” he said.
An announcement touting the Harley Owners Group’s first annual “Rumble at the Moon” ride caught several riders’ attention.
That ride benefits Life’s Bridges, a nonprofit that services the survivors of sudden or unexpected deaths through counseling and support, according to the announcement.
Riders who are coming from the east or north are invited to meet at the Kaua‘i Harley-Davidson shop in Puhi for a convoy out to the Waimea Canyon Park parking lot where registration will take place at 7 p.m. for the ride that leaves at 7:30 p.m.
The ride is open to all riders of street and sport bikes and offers coffee and hot chocolate at the Koke‘e Park after the ride is completed.
Haluapo said riders should note the Fun Ride for Kaua‘i Keiki is coming up Dec. 12 at the Historic County Building.
