HANAPEPE — A 0-0 stalemate between the Junior Pee Wee Kapa‘a Eagles and the Kekaha Seahawks and a 27-6 win by the JPW Lihu‘e Patriots over Koloa shook up the Kaua‘i Pop Warner Football League standings.
The Eagles still lead the standings with a 4-0-1 record and nine points, but the Patriots improve to 4-1 and eight points, hot on the chase for the lead.
This sets up the stage for this weekend’s match when Kapa‘a and Lihu‘e meet at Hanapepe Stadium.
The JPW game between these two teams start at 9 a.m. followed by the Junior Midget game at 11 a.m.
The Kekaha Seahawks are in solid No. 3 in the JPW standings with a 2-2-1 record and five points followed by Koloa dropping to 1-4 and two points. The Hanapepe Colts, enjoying a bye over the weekend, are 0-4.
The Kapa‘a Eagles Junior Midgets remain undefeated in that division following a 28-6 win over the Kekaha Chargers.
A tight skirmish belying the final score saw the Koloa Junior Midgets hold off the Patriots 51-24 to improve to a 4-1 record and eight points.
That is just a pair away from the lead held by the Eagles Junior Midgets who sit at 5-0 and 10 points.
Following the results of Saturday’s games at Hanapepe Stadium, the Hanapepe Colts (1-3), Kekaha Chargers (1-4) and Lihu‘e Patriots (1-4) are tied for third place with two points each.
With just 1:31 remaining in the game, Ryan Banasihan prevented a shutout for Kekaha Seahawks by taking the ball on a 9-yard run into the end zone.
Prior to that, the Patriots JPW lit up the scoreboards with a Lanakila Wilson 2-yard touchdown late in the first quarter.
But that stoked the Patriots’ scoring machine as Kapena Texeira opend the second quarter on a yard charge into the end zone with less than a minute peeled off the period.
Aaron Renaud graced that score with a two-point PAT boot and followed that feat with a one-yard charge to paydirt with just 31 ticks showing in the half.
Douglas Miyasato connected with Wilson on a 27-yard touchdown pass and ran in the point-after for the final math.
Kyren Rapacon ran for three touchdowns and Kainoa Simao added two more to lead the Koloa Jr. Midgets to its 24-51 showing over Lihu‘e.
Chase McFadden, the recipient of a 15-yard touchdown pass from Kelson Andrade in the first period, followed that score with a 25-yard runback of a fumble recovery midway through the quarter.
Simao, who ran in the point-after following the Andrade-McFadden scoring pass, added his own TD on a 76-yard run to the end zone with 2:45 left in the period.
Andrade hit Darian Gerardo on the point-after for the 20-0 first quarter lead.
That did not deter the Patriots who found the end zone with less than a minute peeled off the second quarter when Christopher Efhan scored on a two-yard charge.
Kanoa Iwasaki did the point-after boot for Lihu‘e for the 20-8 deficit only to have Koloa up the ante on the ensuing drive whan Simao found paydirt on a 49-yard run.
Kyren Rapacon gave Koloa a 32-8 halftime lead with 3:30 remaining in the half on a nine-yard charge.
Kanoa Iwasaki pulled the Patriots back into the mix with a nine-yard scoring run at the 7:13 mark and graced that score by booting another PAT for the 32-16 read that stood until the 1:21 mark when Kyren Rapacon found the end zone on a 23-yard scamper for the 38-16 lead at the buzzer.
Again, Lihu‘e was undaunted and quarterback Chanse Ramirez hit Kanoa Iwasaki for its final score, a 12-yard pass.
Kanoa split the uprights on the PAT for the third time in the game at the 8:41 mark only to have Koloa answer with two more scores, Kyren Rapacon runs of 29 and 12 yards, before time ran out. Andrade hit Kalawa‘ia Judd on a point-after play for the final reading.
Billy DeCosta, manning the microphone, kept emphasizing the good quality play demonstrated by both teams.
Leevi Bethel ran for two touchdowns, a 2-yarder in the first quarter and a 24-yard rush in the second quarter to lead the Kapa‘a Eagles Jr. Midgets to its 28-6 win over the Kekaha Chargers.
The Bethel scores gave Kapa‘a a 14-0 halftime lead that was upped early in the third period when Shain Davis found the end zone on a seven-yard charge.
Rashaan Kuhaulua booted the point-after for a 22-0 bulge that was answered by Acetyn Emayo who put Kekaha on the boards with a 50-yard scoring run at the 8:02 mark in the fourth quarter.
Kuhaulua hit Daniel Alonzo on a seven-yard pass for the final score of the game.
The three-way tie for third will be broken Saturday when Koloa takes on the Hanapepe Colts in the afternoon series starting with the JPW game at 1:30 p.m. followed by the Junior Midgets kicking off at 3:30 p.m.
