LIHU‘E — Friends of Christy Mayfield, a 17-year-old senior at Island School, are organizing a fundraiser concert to help with medical expenses as she battles astrocytoma, a rare form of brain tumor.
Astrocytoma in Mayfield, daughter of Janet and Jim Mayfield of Lihu‘e, causes swelling of the brain, which in turn causes excruciating headaches and loss of vision.
The condition requires regular chemotherapy, and regular visits to the University of California at San Francisco Medical Center to meet with doctors there. Doctors there said because of the expansiveness of the tumor operating to remove it isn’t an option.
The travel expenses aren’t covered by the family’s medical insurance, said Janet Mayfield.
The benefit concert is Sunday, Oct. 25, from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m., at the Kilohana lu‘au pavilion, with music by the Blond Boys, a silent auction, and food and beverages for sale.
The admission price is $10 per person, and all proceeds will go to help with Christy Mayfield’s medical expenses.
County Councilmember Dickie Chang hosts the afternoon.
Tickets are available at Tire Warehouse, Photo Spectrum, Kaua‘i Fruit and Flower, Nukumoi Surf Company, Scotty’s Music, Progressive Expressions, Kaua‘i Music & Sound and Studio 203.
