PO‘IPU — Rhonda Kaui earned first finishes in Breakaway Roping and Steer Undecorating en route to ending the day in a tie for All Around Cowgirl at the final 2009 Kaua‘i All Girls Rodeo Association event, Sunday.
Kaui added a second finish in the Goat Tying, a second in the Team Roping with partner Shantel Wong and a third finish in the third D of the 3D Barrels event to finish with 38 points along with Coralyn Murayama.
Murayama, listed on the points tally as leading the field in overall points with 175, teamed with Joyce Miranda to top the Team Roping competition with a 33.44 average, a comeback from the team’s second finish at 18.74 on the first go.
Murayama, teaming with Cheree Rapozo in the same event, came up with an 18.49 on one go for fifth place.
In the Goat Tying event, Murayama finished third below Kaui on a 39.545 go compared with Kaui’s 37.457.
Britni Ludington-Braun, second in the overall standings with 152 points, finished first in the Goat Tying with a 32.061 go to finish as Reserve Cowgirl at the Sunday event.
Murayama also finished fifth in the Steer Undecorating, second in the second D of the 3D Pole Bending and fourth in the first D of the 3D Barrel Racing event.
Taylor Ludington soared into the arena aboard Tunda to lock up first overall in the 3D Barrels with a 17.399 go, .30 faster than Ludington-Braun’s 17.690 go.
Shan Mundon (18.971), Sierra Medeiros (19.020), and Kim Medeiros (19.336) on two horses (19.496) rounded out the second D of Barrels.
Nancy McMahon (20.692), Robin Medeiros (21.364), Kaui (22.017), Laureen Naumu-Balocan (23.295) and Dena Souza (23.969) rounded out the third D leaders.
Following the team of Murayama and Miranda (33.44) and Kaui and Wong (41.03) in the Team Roping competition, Kim Medeiros and Ho‘olai Ludington-Braun (16.86/1), Kaui and Miranda (18.04/1) and Murayama and Rapozo (18.49/1) topped the leaderboards.
Britni Ludington-Braun (32.061) topped the Goat Tying, followed by Kaui (37.457), Murayama (39.545) and Wendy Tannery (16.593/1).
Kaui (38.19) was the only cowgirl to complete two go’s in the Breakaway Roping followed by Alexis Vasconcelles (7.09/1) and Cheree Rapozo-Vasconcelles (17.48/1).
Kaui also was .38 seconds faster in the Steer Undecorating with a 7.41 go, followed by Kim Medeiros at 7.79. Tierra Rapozo (15.71), Debbie Bail (16.46), coming off a tennis match at the Charity Tournament at Po‘ipu Kai, and Murayama (17.40) topped the leaderboard.
Wendy Tannery, riding two steeds, filled in the top two spots of the first D in the Pole Bending event with runs of 22.294 and 23.183. Britni Ludington-Braun filled in the third berth of the first D on a 23.753 go.
Alexis Vasconcelles (24.383), Murayama (24.560), and Taylor Ludington (25.532) filled out the top three berths of the second D.
Tierra Rapozo (26.379) topped the third D, followed by Kim Medeiros (27.210), Mundon (27.210), Robin Medeiros (27.982) and McMahon (29.237).
With the 38 points earned for being the All Around Cowgirl, Murayama soars to a 213 overall point total. Kaui, listed with 137 points entering the arena, finishes the year with 175 points.
Britni Ludington-Braun, sitting in second place overall with 152 points entering the arena, finishes with 28 points for the Sunday rodeo and 180 points, putting her in contention for Reserve honors for the year, just five points ahead of Kaui.
Corinna Vasconcelles, in an e-mail, said overall buckle winners and the announcement of the All-Around Cowgirl for the year will be done after Oct. 24.
