Beginning today, Bishop Museum’s Holoholo Science Educators will bring their hands-on lessons to 10 Kaua‘i schools over the course of a week.
The Holoholo Science program includes standards-based science activities. Sessions are shared in the classroom, assembly and family science nights reaching more than 3,000 students, parents and community members, a news release states.
Bishop Museum Science Education Manager Leon Geschwind said, “Holoholo Science programs bring a piece of the museum to schools throughout the state and offers students and family members a rare chance to handle scientific specimens and state-of-the-art science equipment.”
During the very popular family science night events, a school’s cafeteria or gym is transformed into a “festival” of hands-on science activities. Students and their families inquire and experiment together at their own pace, making fascinating discoveries in Hawai‘i ecology, biology, geology, health and medical science, and anthropology. In addition to exploring these sciences, families become “doctor-detectives” and are faced with the challenge of diagnosing patients.
Every year, Holoholo Science visits Neighbor Island schools.
Holoholo Science is an initiative under the Office of Innovation and Improvement of the U.S. Department of Education. Program cost varies with discounted prices for Title 1 schools.
