Congratulations to Kapa‘a High School graduate Olena Heu (used to be Rubin) who was just named co-anchor of the KHON morning news. The former Miss Hawai‘i will start “Wake Up 2day” on Oct. 19.
Olena was asked to be a judge for Avery Kano’s Miss Lei Mokihana pageant that takes place tonight at the Waimea Theater, but had other commitments.
Kaua‘i County Council meetings just got more exciting with the start of the baseball playoffs. Glenn Mickens has another feather to pull out of his bag, and even while the plastic bag bill was being hashed out, had a conversation with Lauren Zirbel (she’s off to the Big Island, next) about baseball during the council meeting recess.
Hats off to Shelley Paik, Angie Merritt, Dr. Becky Rhoades and all those involved with the 30th anniversary of saving shearwaters and seabirds (yes, they fall onto cruise ships, too). Lani Kawahara (she said the senior softball team forgot to come to the council meeting) came to learn more about the seabirds and ended up winning one of the giveaways, and Coco Zickos now has a towel to keep in her car for those fallouts.
OK, time to see if there’s a window to check out water polo at the YMCA. If you’re in the neighborhood, it starts at 2:30 p.m.
