LIHU‘E — Employees at seven licensed liquor providers were recently caught selling alcohol to persons under the age of 21 and were arrested and charged for prohibited sale of alcohol to minors, according to a county press release.
“The safety of our youth would be greatly compromised if liquor sales to minors continue. We urge all licensees to comply with the laws regarding selling alcohol to minors,” said Kaua‘i Police Department Assistant Chief Roy Asher in the release. “We also need the support of the community and are asking them to report these types of violations.”
The KPD Youth Services Section, in conjunction with the Department of Liquor Control, conducted a compliance check of 19 randomly selected establishments that are licensed to sell liquor on Sept. 18 and 19, county spokeswoman Mary Daubert said in a Friday e-mail.
The establishments at which persons were arrested were Terrace Restaurant, Café Portofino, Kaua‘i Athletic Club, La Bamba Mexican Restaurant, Brennecke’s Beach Broiler, Po‘ipu Beach Broiler and The Point at Po‘ipu, Daubert said in a subsequent e-mail.
Asher noted that KPD and Liquor Control plan to continue their enforcement efforts with the goal of reducing the current failure rate of 37 percent.
Funding for the recent compliance check was provided via grant by the state Department of Health.
Anyone with information about the sales of liquor to minors can call Sgt. Kenneth Carvalho at 241-1697 or Crime Stoppers, 241-1887.
