LIHU‘E — The Waimea High School girls picked up a 1,920 pinfall and the Kapa‘a High School boys rolled a 2,148 pinfall over three games to take Saturday’s Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation bowling matches.
Entering the fourth week of the six-week season, the Menehune girls are breathing down the neck of the Kaua‘i High School girls that finished in third place with a 1,745 pinfall.
Based on point assignments for wins, Kaua‘i, with two first finishes and a third, is at 10 points followed by Waimea at nine points.
Point assignments for the boys and girls matches are four points for first, three for second, two for third, and one for fourth place.
Kapa‘a High School girls finished Saturday’s round in second place on a 1,756 pinfall, breaking the Raider wahine’s two-game win streak by just 11 pins.
Island School girls rounded out the day with a 742 pinfall for three bowlers in three games.
The Kapa‘a boys first finish at 2,148 pinfall is its second straight after starting the season in third place. This puts the Warrior men at 11 points, just a point ahead of Waimea after the Menehune finished Saturday’s round on a 2,074 pinfall. Kaua‘i rolled a 1,927 for third followed by Island School at 1,729.
With Saturday’s results, Kaua‘i boys sit at third overall with six points and Island School rounds out the field with three points.
Randy Iloreta Jr. rolled his season-best 221 in the opening round to announce the Warriors’ presence at the Lihu‘e Bowling Center on a 750 team score.
But Waimea answered in the second round behind Dominic Palabay (185) and Brandon Simpiciano (178) helping lead the Menehune to a 779 team total to Kapa‘a’s 718.
Palabay and James Paleracio each rolled 162 to lead the Menehune men to a 716 finish in the third round to Kapa‘a’s 680 pinfall, but the effort couldn’t overcome the opening 750-579 Kapa‘a-Waimea outcome.
Brad Russell paced the Kaua‘i boys at 147, 162, and 145 followed by Ammon Hoopii-Akau (148, 115, 125) and John Quisi (135, 184, 142).
Jayson Manzano (111, 142, 107) and Daniel Miller (111, 135, 120), Laurence Miller (125, 119, 127) and Kyle Lee (150, 108, 107) paced the Island School effort.
Bronte Acosta (113, 189, 152) paced the Menehune along with Stephanie Acoba (138, 131, 133) and Arlene Valmoja (169, 129, 112), Acosta’s 189 in Game 2, and Almoja’s 169 in Game 1 being their season-best rolls.
Joanna Chang (147, 130, 148) set the pace for Kapa‘a girls followed by Reggie McCabe (137, 104, 120), McCabe’s 137 in Game 1 being her season-best roll.
Megan Perius (79, 78, 132) had her season-best score in Game 3 for Island School. She was joined by Samantha Barry (66, 72, 90) and Christy Mayfield (65, 67, 93).
