LIHU‘E — Three Kaua‘i Junior Golfers will be in the field when the Hawai‘i State Junior Golf Association conducts the 3rd Annual HSJGA Kaanapali Match Play Championship at the Kaanapali Kai Course for golfers ages 11-18 this weekend.
Bryden Salvador of Kilauea, playing in the Boys 11-12 group, Hiilani Alana, playing in the Girls 11-12 group, and Pono Tokioka, playing in the Boys 13-14 group, are the Kaua‘i golfers participating in the two-day championships.
The top 48 HSJGA players in their respective age divisions will compete in five different age divisions, states a release from the HSJGA.
“We’re excited that Kaanapali will be hosting this championship for the third year,” said Mary Bea Porter-King, president of the HSJGA. “Having our HSJGA members experience the nuances of match play will help them prepare for matches during the USGA Championships and the US Hawa‘i-Japan Junior Cup.”
The top eight boys in each of the following divisions will crown a champion: 15-18, 13-14, and 11-12. The girls will crown champions in two age groups with 16 players in the girls’ 13-18 division and eight players in the Girls 11-12. The field is invited from the top point list as of July 9.
The HSJGA Kaanapali Match Play Championship will be the last event in a long race to earn points to qualify for the 2009 USA Hawai‘i-Japan Junior Cup where 22 Hawai‘i team members (13 boys, 9 girls) will compete in a Ryder Cup format against the top junior golfers from Japan.
“Juniors Joining Nations” is the theme of the third annual international competition that will be played Nov. 5-8 at the Waikoloa Kings’ Course on the Big Island.
