How many of you remember when Ichiro Suzuki of the Seattle Mariners played for the Hilo Stars of the Hawai‘i Winter Baseball League?
Joe Grace does since Ichiro loved the burgers (the cheeseburgers were also great for stuffing in a pocket for enjoyment out in left field). Ichiro used to bang homeruns out onto Kapule Highway from Vidinha Stadium and a special net had to be erected to “protect” the passing motorists.
Those days, Jim Koishigawa (he now has the batting cages in Waipahu) had the McDonald’s franchise (Joe Grace burgers beat out the Golden Arches) and even Ross Kagawa served some time as a league manager for the baseball league.
J Robertson (he used to do play-by-play on KUAI) said he thinks Joe might still have some autographed things lying around somewhere.
On the subject of food, Kaua‘i Fire Capt. Dave Bukoski was trying to find the source of the Po’s look-alike bento during the Weapons of Mass Destruction exercise, Thursday. Julie Hall of the Kaua‘i Chapter of the American Red Cross said they had box lunches from both Po’s Kitchen and Cujo’s in Kalaheo. OK, Marina Octavio, get ready because Capt. Dave is going to stop in and check it out.
OK, time to get out and about for the KIF and Pop Warner.
